DB V 80 – BR 280

only some 6 years after WW II the state railway DB of still young Western Germany looked out for light road, multiple purpose diesel locomotives to replace several steam locomotive classes, like class 64, class 93 and many more. The two Germany locotive builder MaK (Maschinenbau Kiel) and KM (Krauss-Maffei) developed a small series of 10 locomotives in the 1000 hp range. This smal series was considered to be a kind of test bed for diesel-hydraulic transmission and in fact, very important information could be received. All of the knowledge and experience was used for the V 80’s successor, the V 100. All ten V 80’s were designed for push-pull and multiple unit operation.

Maerklin, Trix, Roco and  Lima built HO-models predominantely for the German model railroad market. I own 3 Roco models and 1 Lima, three of them with a very distinctive exhaust silencer on the cab roof. Here we go….
